“Spirits of Christmas” is a musical production based on
“A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens.

This musical is purchased with a soundtrack of all the songs which can be used wholly or in part at the director’s discretion
It tells the story of “A Christmas Carol” in a modern setting. It is the tale of a mean old miser, Scrooge. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the spirit of his dead partner who was also mean in his life time. He warns him to change his ways or things would not go well for him in the afterlife. He tells him to expect visits from three spirits, who would show him events in the past, present and future and thereby hope to convince him to change his ways. As the play progresses we follow him through these three time frames and eventually to his decision to change his ways for the better.
Spirits of Christmas is most suitable for children in the Senior Primary school phase (aged 9 – 13) It has about 40 speaking parts, some big, some small, some non-speaking parts and many different parts for a chorus of singers and actors. There are 12 songs in the musical and the production lasts about one and a half to two hours. The musical score is not complex as it can also be played by schoolchildren if this is possible. The score has been written mainly for piano, but there are a few other instrument parts.

If I could,
I would fly into the sky and catch a star,
Then I’d keep it at my bedside in a jar,
To remind me that the night is not as dark
As it seems.
If I could,
I would gather all the tears that people cry,
And I’d let them fall into a desert dry.
Then I’d watch to see the miracle of life,
From broken dreams.
Every end has a new beginning somewhere,
Every storm will become a rainbow,
Every winter’s night will return to light
Broken dreams still can mend,
In the end.
Jacob Marley is dead! He’s dead as a doornail
Jacob Marley is dead! He’s out like a light
Seven years he’s been dead, departed and buried
And the headstone on his grave will still announce the fact that
Jacob Marley’s dead!
Jacob Marley is dead! He’s dead as a dodo
Jacob Marley is dead! He’s turned up his toes
Seven years he’s been dead, departed and buried
And the world is neither richer nor is poorer now that
Jacob Marley’s dead!
Gone now to meet his maker
Shuffled off his mortal coil
There is no doubt at all that
Jacob Marley’s dead!
It’s not too late
There’s still some time left over.
It’s not too late to walk the right way at last.
It’s not too late
To write a different story
Not too late to take a spade and bury the past.
I’ve wasted all this precious time and it will never come again,
For I chose myself above a world that’s crying with pain.
Now I’m throwing off the old my wretched life to reclaim.
There’s a lot of changes I must make.
It’s not too late
To try another future.
It’s not too late to stop the die that I cast.
It’s not too late
To write a different story
Not too late to change and make amends for the past.
How could I miss the dreadful need that was right there before my eyes?
Did the voice inside my head drown out the grief in their cries?
And I may not have much time but I am willing to try.
So for all the world and for my sake
This is a chance I must take.
It’s not too late
There’s still some time left over.
It’s not too late to walk the right way at last.
It’s not too late
To write a different story
Not too late to take a spade and bury the past.
