About Out of Here

Out of Here is a Christian musical which can be produced by churches and youth groups. It can be produced with a full band, but there is also a soundtrack which is purchased with the music scores, which can be used wholly or in part, at the director’s discretion.

Out of Here is the story of the prodigal son in a modern setting. Disillusioned with his life, working in the family business, and wanting to follow his dream of becoming a rock star, a young man asks his father to give him his inheritance. At first all goes well and he is living the dream. But then he battles to keep up with living the rock star life, and suffers with burnout. There are, however, plenty more where he came from and he is quickly replaced with another rising star by his slimy and money-grabbing agent. Now brought down low, with only debts because of his fabulous previous lifestyle, and having been abandoned by the girlfriend who only loved the rock star in him, he goes home to beg his father’s forgiveness and ask him to employ him as a servant. But he does not realise how full of grace his father really is.

Song: If I Could

If I could,
I would fly into the sky and catch a star,
Then I’d keep it at my bedside in a jar,
To remind me that the night is not as dark
As it seems.

If I could,
I would gather all the tears that people cry,
And I’d let them fall into a desert dry.
Then I’d watch to see the miracle of life,
From broken dreams.

Every end has a new beginning somewhere,
Every storm will become a rainbow,
Every winter’s night will return to light
Broken dreams still can mend,
In the end.

Song: Jacob Marley Is Dead

Jacob Marley is dead! He’s dead as a doornail
Jacob Marley is dead! He’s out like a light
Seven years he’s been dead, departed and buried
And the headstone on his grave will still announce the fact that
Jacob Marley’s dead!

Jacob Marley is dead! He’s dead as a dodo
Jacob Marley is dead! He’s turned up his toes
Seven years he’s been dead, departed and buried
And the world is neither richer nor is poorer now that
Jacob Marley’s dead!

Gone now to meet his maker
Shuffled off his mortal coil
There is no doubt at all that
Jacob Marley’s dead!

Song: It’s Not Too Late

It’s not too late
There’s still some time left over.
It’s not too late to walk the right way at last.
It’s not too late
To write a different story
Not too late to take a spade and bury the past.

I’ve wasted all this precious time and it will never come again,
For I chose myself above a world that’s crying with pain.
Now I’m throwing off the old my wretched life to reclaim.
There’s a lot of changes I must make.

It’s not too late
To try another future.
It’s not too late to stop the die that I cast.
It’s not too late
To write a different story
Not too late to change and make amends for the past.

How could I miss the dreadful need that was right there before my eyes?
Did the voice inside my head drown out the grief in their cries?
And I may not have much time but I am willing to try.
So for all the world and for my sake
This is a chance I must take.

It’s not too late
There’s still some time left over.
It’s not too late to walk the right way at last.
It’s not too late
To write a different story
Not too late to take a spade and bury the past.

He’s wasted all this precious time and it will never come again,
For he chose himself above a world that’s crying with pain.
Now he’s throwing off the old his wretched life to reclaim.
So for all the world and for his sake
This is a chance he must take.
This is a chance he must take.
